Case Study: Magellan

Magellan's investment team has an amazing opportunity to directly influence the financial outcomes of our investors as well as shaping the direction of some of the world's great companies

At Magellan, we believe that our objectives as investors are two-fold: we seek to protect the capital of our investors while generating attractive returns on our investors’ capital.  Magellan seeks to achieve these objectives by investing in outstanding companies at attractive prices.

Investment can be viewed as analogous to competing a 10,000-piece jigsaw puzzle but with only 1,000 pieces. That is, investors are asked to solve complex problems with less-than-perfect information. These problems require informed, insightful decisions about companies that take into account the current circumstances as well as gaining an understanding of what the future might hold for the company. If through our questioning and analysis we can gain an understanding of the future, then we are on a path to meeting our two goals and, as a consequence, to providing for improved retirement incomes for our end investors.

How the team works together

Our investment team follows a rigorous process that involves searching the world to find outstanding companies that are most likely to achieve our objectives and then seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of the companies we have identified. Our investment professionals seek to be global experts in their understanding of the companies and sectors under their coverage.

Hear from a team member

Investment management is a job of perpetual learning. We draw on a breadth of quantitative and qualitative skills to analyse, identify and effectively articulate valuable investment opportunities. At Magellan we have the privilege of investing billions of dollars of our investors’ funds on a global basis. We endeavour to find the worlds’ highest quality companies and gain an in-depth understanding of the key opportunities and disruptive threats these businesses may face, as well as the strategies being employed by some of the worlds’ best business people as they navigate the companies through a changing world. We have a unique opportunity to actively engage with the board and management of the companies we research, and in ensuring they make sound decisions, ensure the capital entrusted to us by our investors is protected.
